Get Organized With Dry Erase Boards, Corkboards & Chalkboards!

From schools and offices to kitchens and dorm rooms, almost everyone has some sort of memo or bulletin board to help them share ideas and stay organized. In this article, we'll discuss the three most common styles of boards, along with the unique characteristics of each.

Stroller Depot

Dry Erase Boards
Also referred to as "whiteboards," dry erase boards have slick, coated surfaces that enable the user to write non-permanent messages with specialized markers. They are frequently used for presentation purposes in schools and offices, but they have been gaining popularity with home users, especially since the release of decorative and specialized models (such as calendars and "chore charts"). Whiteboards are surprisingly versatile, with large boards doubling as projection surfaces for digital and traditional projectors. Markings made on white boards are more resistant to environmental factors (such as water) than messages written on chalkboards, and they do not generate dust like chalk does, which allows them to be used in dust-sensitive atmospheres.

Stroller Depot

In addition to standard dry erase board styles, many retailers stock a number of specialty boards, including magnetic boards, calendars, combo boards (which have both cork and dry erase sections), designer boards with decorative frames, and unframed "tile" boards.

Chalkboards
Chalkboards (also called "blackboards") have been present in classrooms around the world for many years. They were originally crafted from slabs of slate, but modern chalkboards can be made from steel covered in porcelain enamel or a board covered in a dark paint that has a matte finish. Sticks of calcium sulphate (commonly referred to as "chalk") are used to make non-permanent markings on the boards, which are easily removed using soft felt erasers. Though many schools have started transitioning from chalkboards to dry erase boards, they are increasingly popular in homes, where they are often used to jot down notes and lists. Chalkboards tend to generate some dust when used regularly, however they are odor-free (unlike the markers used on dry erase boards, which can have a strong odor).

Cork Boards
Cork boards (also called "bulletin boards") are made of soft, spongy cork that allows the user to pin and remove papers, photos, and other items. Unlike dry erase and chalkboards, cork boards do not allow the user to write and erase messages, but the ease of adding and removing documents has made them a regular fixture in many community centers and universities. Many chalkboard and dry erase board styles are now incorporating cork sections to allow users to have the ability to write non-permanent messages and pin items up side-by-side. No specialized supplies are required to use a cork board - any small tack, pin, or even staple can be used to secure documents.

Accessories
Dry erase markers and erasers are the most widely used board accessories, due to the popularity of dry erase boards. The markers themselves possess a number of qualities that make them preferable over chalk, including that they do not aggravate allergies and asthma in the way that chalk does and are available in a much larger color palette. Like other types of markers, they are offered in a variety of tip sizes and styles, including point and chisel. Dry erasers are similar in look and function to chalk erasers, but they have a softer surface to help prevent scratches. There are also many creative accessories on the market, such as decorative magnets, magnetic document clips, eraser-topped markers, and markers with magnetic tassels.

In Review
Whether you're looking to enhance your conference room presentations, make classroom lessons come to life, help your college-bound teen stay organized, or simply have a place to jot down occasional notes and lists, you'll find that a dry erase board, chalkboard, or cork board will fit your needs. They're versatile, inexpensive, and available in a wide range of features and styles.

Why are there so many free offers online and are they real or just scams?

Stroller Depot

That's a great question, many of these are very real, just like this one that offers a Free Home Depot Gift Card to you in return for you submitting your email address and filling out a survey for their company. The reason they do this is twofold.

Stroller Depot

First, by you giving them your email address you are added to a huge email list that they can use to send out advertisements, which they get paid for of course, and other offers for surveys and free stuff. Second, they will ask you to fill out a survey or two, depends on the offer, and they can use the information they get from that survey and compile it and then sell it to advertising firms and large corporations that are seeking research on the things people want, there likes and dislikes, what turns them off, and so on and so forth.

These companies make a ton of money from selling the results of the surveys and also make good money just by utilizing the email list that they build through these offers. It's just like when you buy something at a store such as Barnes and Noble and they try to get you to sign up for a special card, the only reason they are doing this is to get your email address and be able to sell to you later on after you have walked out of the store, and also be able to track your spending habits so they can use that data later on too.

I have done tons of these surveys and have gotten loads of free stuff, mostly gift cards to various chains and restaurants. It is pretty easy to do and usually takes about ten to twenty minutes depending if you actually put any thought into the questions, I do since they are giving me something in return, it helps keep my conscience clear.

I do use a throw-away email address from yahoo so I don't get a bunch of advertising in my real email though. Check it out, fill out a survey and get your Free Home Depot Gift card and decide for yourself if it is worth it or not, not much to lose though in my opinion.

Daycare and the Stay at Home Mom

Maybe I'm completely out of the mainstream. Either that or a number of parents I've met have been bamboozled. One thing is for sure, some body has lost their way. Here's what I'm talking about. I heard a stay at home mom say that she feared that she was hurting her children by not putting them in daycare. Is it me who's lost her mind?

Stroller Depot

I don't think I've ever heard that before. I've heard of women (or in some cases, dads) who have left their jobs to be stay at home parents. But the idea that you are "harming" your children by "denying" them the benefits of daycare just seems nuts to many of us?

Stroller Depot

Well, let's put daycare in its proper place. For many individuals it is a necessity, plain and simple. Some parents have no other choice. I am in no way criticizing parents, who for the sake of making a living, and keeping body and soul together have to place their children in daycare. But there is no evidence I know of that indicates that the best place for a month old baby is laying in a bed at daycare. But there's an abundance of evidence pointing to the fact that the first few months and years are a critical time for children's bonding. It's much better that they bond with their natural parent if possible.

Children in daycare also tend to catch every bug that comes around, so it seems like they get sick more often. I've heard the argument to this point that they get these childhood diseases out of the way and build a tolerance to them earlier in life. There was a time when I bought into that argument, but after watching the general health of daycare kids vs. stay at home kids I'm not entirely sure about that. I'm willing to say that if that's what you believe, you may be right.

But let's look at another simple fact of life, there is virtually no way a worker at a daycare center can love your child as much as you do. Even if they could love them in the same way you do, the ratio of caretakers to children in most daycare centers are four or five to one. Even the most dedicated, compassionate worker simply doesn't have time to give as much individual attention as is sometimes needed.

What About the Benefits of Daycare & Preschool?

There are some benefits to daycare. I can't think of any advantage to putting a four week old infant into daycare, except, as mentioned above - sometimes it is a financial necessity. As the child grows to toddler age, a good case could be made that children in daycare improve their social skills. I agree.

Certainly by age three or especially four, the benefits of daycare begin to grow. Most kindergarten teachers say that children who have been to preschool have less of an adjustment when they enter kindergarten class. These kids almost always know the alphabet, colors and can count (some to higher numbers than others) they make the adjustment to "sitting still" at their table better. They are less likely to suffer from separation anxiety.

OK Rachel, Just What Are You Saying I Should Do?

I am not saying that you will "harm you child if you put them in daycare at three weeks old, but if you must follow that road, you should try to spend as much bonding time with them as possible before and after work.

If your finances will allow, consider the value of staying at home with you children for the first few years.

What Then?

At this point the question becomes even more personal. Daycare at this age begins to make more sense. But what if you want to keep your kids home with you for longer? Either way you go will probably be fine.

Even as they get into the toddler age, there are plenty of other ways to get your child into social activities outside of daycare. Are there other kids in your neighborhood? What's wrong with playing with those kids? There are also the park, Church, community activities, etc.

As for learning their colors, counting, and alphabet, there have never been so many resources. My kids learned how to count watching Nick Jr. & PBS kids, and I taught them myself. Let's face it, you don't really have to know too much to teach a child the alphabet, colors, and counting to 30. I also spent a few dollars on a product that helped me teach my kids phonics.

The Most Important Things

I'm old enough to have watched several children grow up. In my personal observation, it seems that kids who are loved and nurtured at home, seem to do just fine whether they attend daycare or not. So my friend who fears she's harming her children by staying at home with them...well, that's just silly. To those of you, who by necessity place your children in daycare, as tired and busy as you are, find a way to spend quality time with them when you're home. Love them, read to them, kindly discipline them, make them feel secure - they'll be fine, and so will you.

5 Secrets For Sexy Arms

Just about every woman I've ever trained focuses a lot of attention on getting smaller hips, butt, abs and legs. Sound familiar? In truth, a symmetrical body is one of the sexiest looks you can strive for.

Stroller Depot

By symmetrical, I'm referring to an overall body fat reduction and a complete workout program that doesn't neglect any muscle group. A 'magical" end result will happen from a workout that makes the shoulders as important as the glutes, the chest as important as the hips -- and, yes -- the arms as important as the abs. This makes the body appear balanced and artistic in design.

Stroller Depot

Everyone is fascinated by women who have sleek and tight arms -- biceps that look fit with a bit of muscularity, and triceps that look tight and firm. It displays strength and femininity wrapped in one package. What could be sexier than that?

There are a few things I've learned about attaining beautiful arms that have proven themselves time and again. These training concepts are not always seen in gyms and hardly performed by trainees.

As always, you do have to perform cardio and strength training to make changes; these are the best tools we have to improve a muscle from a cosmetic standpoint.

Here's my formula for sexy arms:

1. Antagonist Workouts - Antagonist training refers to working opposing muscle groups in the same workout. There are many methods to manipulate a workout, but I've had great success performing a biceps exercise, immediately followed by a triceps exercise. For example, if you're performing three sets of dumbbell curls and three sets of triceps dumbbell extensions, you would perform the curl movement, and after completing the goal reps, immediately go to the triceps exercise. Wait a bit and then continue the cycle (biceps exercise followed by triceps). This allows you to use more weight poundage because the opposing muscle group gets a bit of a "rest" as you work the other muscle. This is my all-time favorite way to work arms, and I've had my best success with clients using this method.

2. Time Between Sets - I've found that arms respond quite well with a 45-to 60-second rest between sets. Using our antagonist workout example: in point #1 - After performing the biceps curl and triceps extension, one would wait no more then 45 seconds and then repeat the cycle. People tend to wait longer, or they repeat a set too soon. There has to be some time allotted for recovery, but not so much that you begin to get stale. This allows you to do more work in less time and pumps blood volume into the arm.

3. The Tweak - This special move is for the biceps muscles, not the triceps (back of the arm). The tweak refers to a simple move that will provide great results. For example, when performing a biceps curl with a dumbbell, most people will curl the weight up towards the upper arm and then return to the starting position and repeat. The fact is, they missed a critical move. When curling the dumbbell to the upper arm, you should turn the 'pinky' finger and wrist in the direction outside of the shoulder area as you approach the top part of the movement. This slight tweak provides a perfect biceps contraction and you'll definitely feel and see results from it. The entire movement - Curl -and-tweak is one movement, so don't separate them.

4. Specialization Days - Although I did make the initial comment that one should always strive for a symmetrical appearance, I also believe that using a specialized approach for specific periods provides great value. For example, for a four- to six -week period, add three to four additional sets for your biceps and your triceps in one of your weekly sessions. Don't try this in every workout because you'll simply over work them. Just one day per week, try adding volume (more sets). This will force your arms to adapt to an increase in overload. If you have time, you can even just add an additional workout day and make it just an arm workout session (no other muscle groups) for four to six weeks.

5. Lower Body Fat - You won't get great- looking arms with elevated body fat levels. Sometimes some of my new female clients tell me that they hate the flab on the back of their arms and want to know what exercises will make the arms sleek. It doesn't quite work like that. As you perform your arm exercises and as you reduce body fat through a slight calorie reduction with added cardiovascular exercise, - you'll see your arms develop the way you want them to. The muscles will develop slightly from your workouts, and your reduced body fat will then create sleek muscles.

A good nutrition program combined with a slight calorie deficit, cardiovascular exercise and weight training provides vital balance. A proper nutrition program will send just the right amount of protein, carbohydrates and monounsaturated fats into your body and help your arms (as well as your entire body) look leaner. Cardio will accelerate the fat- burning process and weight training will stimulate and develop your muscles so that when the fat comes off - you're left with a lean and tight body, and of course, beautifully sculpted arms.

It may take some time, and you will have to be patient, but the end result will be worth it - strength and femininity in one package.
